The Geese And The Tortoise – Panchatantra Stories In English
The Geese And The Tortoise: Once upon a time, there was a village. The name of that village was Motipur. In Motipur there was a big pond where lived one pair of geese and a tortoise.
They always lived together and lived their life so smoothly. Sometimes the other aquatic organisms who also lived in that pond felt jealous to see their friendship, but it didn’t affect their bonding. They were very happy.
Suddenly a dark day came in the history of Motipur village. The lacking of rainfall caused drought. Thus, the ponds, valleys, wells, and rivers of that village became dry.
The pond where the tortoise and two geese lived became also dried. Those aquatic species couldn’t live in that dried pond. Thus, they became very tense.
Due to the drought, the climate condition changed. Heavy sunlight, dehydration, and lack of heavy rainfall made the environmental condition worst from bad.
They also noticed that some animals couldn’t tolerate this terrible weather change, thus some of them already died. Some of them decided to shift their address from Motipur to other villages.
To observe this horrible condition, they became furious. On another side, the water level of that pond became low day by day. Fear of death swallows their mind.
Then a goose told them that he know a pond which was situated in the neighboring village of Motipur named, Mallarpur where the climate condition was not as bad as Motipur and there were present a pond which is larger than that pond, and the water level of the pond is also high.
So the tortoise and two decided that they will change their address too as they can get favorable conditions there to survive, but a problem arose there.
It was very easy to change their address from the pond of Motipur to the pond of Mallarpur for two geese as they could fly, but it was quite a difficult task to change the place for the tortoise as he couldn’t fly.
If the tortoise started to shift himself by walking, then it will be difficult to survive for him as it takes so much time. On the other hand, it was next to impossible for them to survive.
Then geese told them that he had a plan. The two sides of a stick will be held by two geese and the tortoise hold the middle portion of that stick with the help of his mouth.
Thus, they can easily change their address too quickly, but the only drawback was the tortoise could not tell anything while they will be flying as it may cause danger for him. The other geese and the tortoise also consent to this plan. Though, they had no other option but to move their position. So they decided to leave that place in next morning.
According to their plan, they started their happy journey, though it was not a happy ending. The tortoise was very good, but the only problem was he couldn’t control his anger and he was very talkative too. Due to these two features, he falls into danger.
When they were flying in the sky some people were there in the village, and they notice the strange movement of those three creatures, and they were laughing to see the inability of the tortoise.
They started to criticize the tortoise. In the meantime, a bird was also flying in the sky he also laughed at the tortoise and told him that he was a loser even though he couldn’t fly in the sky.
The geese also heard the tone of those people and the bird, but they could control their anger and remain silent, but as the tortoise was impatient he couldn’t keep his anger intact after listening to the condemnation.
As soon as the tortoise tried to say something, he fell to the ground. The people hit him and the tortoise died. The geese couldn’t do anything to protect their friend. They only became witnesses of that tragic consequence.
